Just a decade ago, hardly anyone made a phone call over the Internet. Meanwhile it is standard. All IP – means: Telephony completely over the Web. The better the broadband network, the more intensive the spread of all communication over it. A telephone network of your own, such as the familiar ISDN lines, is simply no longer necessary.
The market for telephone systems is in the midst of a revolutionary upheaval. For many, cordless IP telephony is like a liberation in everyday office life.
Telephone systems – the modern way to save money
Their names are Carlota, Angeles, Lidia and Marga. And they have a profession that no longer exists. The four ladies play in the successful Netflix series “The Telephone Operators”. Decades an exceedingly honourable profession. No matter who wanted to talk to whom on the phone – friendly telephone operators plugged the plugs into the telephone system so that people who had something to say could talk to each other on the phone.
Technology has long replaced telephone operators. And modern telephone systems are becoming smarter and faster. And: they help to save more and more money.
The history of telecommunications
It has been common practice for companies for decades. Every phone call had its own socket. The living interfaces, the telephonists, were plugged from the outside to the inside, from the inside to the outside and from the inside to the inside. By the way: Very soon it was almost all friendly ladies who took on this job. Why? Because the higher voices of women were better understood via the telephone frequencies transmitted at that time.
Even into the 70s, telephone systems were stored in metal cabinets. The switching was carried out via rotary selectors, lifting rotary selectors, call seekers, group voters and line dialers. Until the 80s.
TK-systems – it becomes digital
The first revolution in telephony was ISDN. ISDN means: Integrated Services Digital Network. The highlight, which ensured that ISDN was used in millions of offices as well as in private households, was that, unlike the analogue fixed network, communication was possible on several channels. For example, making phone calls and surfing the Internet at the same time. ISDN multi-device connections also ensured modern telecommunications in companies. Up to 10 numbers, distributable to any number of end devices. Especially for smaller companies the opportunity for a new telephone system.
Technology makes it possible – there are always better communication tools available
The digitalization of telecommunications has led to the development of more and more smart communication tools. Such tools make working life much easier.
- Cloud telephony
- Voice over IP
- Fax to Mail
- Mail to Fax
- Instant messaging
The IP telephone system – the beautiful new world of telephony
The result always seems to be the same: people on the phone talk to each other. But the way in which this communication takes place now differs completely from the way it was a few years ago. IP-based telephony means that all communication between two parties is divided into data packets and sent via servers. The conversation is no longer made possible by the line, but by the World Wide Web.
Sounds too good to be true – free phone calls
Modern telecommunications systems provide massive savings effects. For example with internal calls. In the past, in-house telephone calls also cost money. Anyone who wanted to talk to his or her colleague had to run. Or pay.
Web telephony eliminates these costs completely.
Further savings effects:
- Not every office needs its own line. Chargeable connections can thus be much better utilized.
- The accounting department needs to know who called whom when and for how long. The telephone system automatically logs the data and saves time and effort.
Dangers of VoIP Telephony
If you want to communicate using VoIP telephones, you need the necessary hardware. The existing telephones must be VoIP compatible, as must the existing routers. If a router prevents VoIP in the settings, it makes VoIP telephony impossible. Existing landline telephones should also be VoIP-capable. Attention: The telephone is not plugged into the IDSN connection or, if still available, the analogue telephone connection, but via LAN cables to the router.
By the way, so-called softphones are very modern. Softphones are software with which you can make phone calls. Installed on the end device, calls are made using a keypad.
VoIP telephone systems: The standard of our time
Voice over IP – completely Internet-based telephony has been the new standard since 2018. No more lines, only digital transfer.
And there are two ways:
On-premise: All calls are made over the Internet. But the system is physically present. A necessary solution where there is a low bandwidth and the network is too slow. The stationary system guarantees stable performance and full access to the software. However, scalability has its limits. An increase in the number of employees requires expansion, upgrading and additional costs.
The second option is the on-demand solution. The entire telephony lies in the cloud. Flexible, scalable and at a reasonable price. You only pay for what you need. Disadvantage: High bandwidths must be guaranteed. Otherwise, the phone remains silent.
The latest trend – the cloud telephone system
In the meantime, many telephone systems are hosted via IP-based cloud software. Telephony migrates completely to external servers. Hosting is managed via the cloud. Savings effect: No installation, no hardware, no maintenance. New functionalities are updated via software updates, new extensions within the company are just a click away. However, the highest rule applies here as well: The network must be stable for a cloud telephone system.
Back to Carlota, Angeles, Lidia, Marga, the heroines of the TV series. Human APIs are no longer necessary. A bit of a pity, but telephone operators are indeed no longer needed. However, there is one thing you definitely need for a functioning telecommunications system: people you can call.
